Seduction - Seduction 1988

A&M Records USAT 651

I remember John Leech playing this for the first time on Essex FM. A thursday night if my memory serve correctly. He enthused about the wonderful sound, the Clivilles & Cole production and how great it was to have a new song that had a real melody and no breaks and bleeps, etc. Two minutes later.....

"Oh You Bastard.... Don't Be So FUCKING SERIOUS!"

...and that children, is how we found out that John wasn't listening to his records before airing them. Make no mistakes here, this is a beautiful tune with some great 'lyrics' and heavy breathing... OK, I'm just a perv. Fortunately, the Reprise Loft Mix is also beautiful but swear word free. He was a lucky man, nearly got his arse canned. Had great taste in music though and Essex FM lost a lot of credibility when he moved on.

Dream Warriors - My Definition... (YD Remixes) 1990

4th & Broadway 12 BRX 197

Watching the Dream Warriors taking the Pop world by storm with their 'Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style', the JazzWorld decided that their own definition would be a little different. The UK was on the verge of a Acid Jazz explosion. Everybody in Hip-Hop was 'getting Jazz' from Stetsasonic to Gang Starr and even Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. On the UK Soul Scene the name on everybody's lips was The Young Disciples. 'Femi Fem' Williams and
'Marco' Nelson would make the world a better place by recording an album featuring the voice of Carleen Anderson, thus launching her on to a solo career that would produce 'True Spirit'. Thanks guys, a worthy legacy.

Marco & Femi were called in to remix the 'Boombastic Jazz' of the Dream Warriors and yet another 'defining moment' set the new decade on track. Here then, are the Young Disciples Mixes of My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style. The Next Definition is different, very different, Cool with a capital C!

YoYo Honey - Groove On 1991

Zomba Music JIVE T 289

This is the reason I like YoYo Honey so much, the second single prior to the album and another Perfecto Mix. Hardly necessary though because the Club Mix is more than adequate but still, Oakenfold & Osbourne make it silky smooth. This for me, is Shoniwa's finest hour, Groove On does exactly what it says on the can. Infectious, this groove goes straight for the jugular.

The producer behind this excellent groove is Michael Peden who was also a member of The Chimes.

Watergates - Never Gonna Give You Up 1992

Bump 'N' Hustle Music BUMP 12

This wonderful piece of soulful dance arrived in 1992. I read about it, as with most of my purchases, in Blues & Soul magazine (hey Marcus, would you believe it, they are mostly all gone!) where Steve Hobbs gave it the thumbs up. Julian Jonah behind the project and Janette Sewell on vocals convinced me it was a must. Never seen it since and I've never heard anybody else play it. It's trés, trés good, try it, you'll like it.

Apple - Believe 1993

Ninja Tune zen cds 15

This is, to my limited knowledge, the only release by Apple, of whom I can find no information at all. Featuring the vocal talent of Marvin Springer. Springer has a wonderful falsetto voice and it's criminal that it has not been more widely used. This release is a Coldcut Production, with lyrics written by Springer, that is filed under Acid Jazz. A soulful house tune would be an unfair description but its more accurate than Acid Jazz. Think Deep Gospel House?
