Martine Girault - Revival 1992

Opaz Records OP001/SRH
Photobucket

This breathtakingly beautiful piece of sublime soul came out of London in 1992. In a era when everybody that wanted to "be somebody" on the soul scene, was trying to recreate a rare groove, acid jazz sound, Dalston's Finest was just doing his thing. Ray Hayden came across this smokey, Brooklyn chanteuse and decided her voice would sound good on his music.

The line up is Opaz except for Martine Girault on vocals. Danny G supplying synth flute and Neville Malcolm on guitar with Hayden overseeing everything. All three are more than competent on keyboards and the result is a most incredible four and a half minutes of lounge bar soul. In 1992 this release was voted, deservedly so, Best Soul Record of the year by DMC.

This particular 12" was a Limited Edition on the Opaz Records label. It features an Instrumental and the bonus track, Nothin's Gonna Change, which was a dancefloor killer at the time.

For some reason, probably because of the demand, the record was handed to ffrr for a major release. This was a great move because the new 12" featured a new track. The Funky Vibes Mix of Revival does little to improve the actual song but makes an interesting bit of dance fodder. On the flip though, we have 'cause It Matters To Me which is as good as Revival and makes for a hell of a release. The Quiet Fire version is the real gem but Renaisance is also worthy.

Sybil Thomas - Rescue Me 1983

West End Records WEND 124
Photobucket

This is a gorgeous song that never fails to pull me in. If the vocal reminds you of Raw Silk then it's no surprise. Sybil Thomas was the vocalist for Raw Silk (remember Do It To The Music, how manyy times has that acc. been sampled?) and should not be confused with the other artists called simply Sybil, she is another artist altogether. You will also hear her voice all over Luther's 'Never Too Much' album.

So we have a great voice on this excellent song, we also have a great producer though. The great Nick Martinelli teams up with David Todd on this Watchout Production, to bring us a tune that sounds as good today as it did 25 years ago.

Loose Ends - Magic Touch 1985

Virgin Records VS761 13
Photobucket

Not much to see on this one but that just adds to the audio sensation, less to detract. This white label (OK, mauve label then) came from nowhere and spread like chinese whispers for a short time. The only info is on the sticker, the serial stamped in the run out on both sides with A-1 & B-1 to tell them apart.

The reason for this Virgin Promo is the addition of the legendary Roy Ayers playing vibraphone on Loose Ends latest single (at the time, of course) and although they have noted that his appearance is courtesy of CBS Records, they then go and spell his name wrong. The 'Vibes Version' is even more beautiful than the classic original and for the Roy Ayers fans, the B-side is an instrumental.

Loose Ends - Tell Me What You Want 1984

Virgin Records VS 658-12
Photobucket
The fourth release by Loose Ends was the first release from their first album 'A Little Spice' and it was also the first of their releases to make an impact on the UK Chart. In late February 1984 it entered at #74 and the next week it was gone. This however, as we all know, has no bearing on the quality of the music, despite the fact that Loose Ends would spend quite a bit of time in said chart for the next decade. 'Tell Me What You Want' is a superb bit of bouncy Brit Funk that has Jazz Funk influences all over it. It is also very representative of Loose Ends and is a shining example of what they would become. Class!

Keith Patrick - Keith Patrick 1988

Atlantic Records 781 815-1
Keith Patrick

I bought this album for 'Night To Remember' which was mixed by Nick Martinelli. Although there are some other tracks that have stood the test of time, Heaven is the track here that any self respecting Quiet Storm soul lover should not be without. Absolutely sublime!

Released in 1984, this Nick Martinelli production was available in a Limited Edition Double Pack. Choose Me is a beautiful piece of 80's Brit Soul that should be in every serious soul collection. The second 12" (same serial no but -C and D carved in the run out) features the essential In The Sky (Remix) backed with the not so essential, Mastermind Turntable Mix.

  • Choose Me (Rescue Me) (Extended Remix)

  • In The Sky (Remix)
  • Mastermind Turntable Mix: Features Tell Me What You Want & Emergency (Dial 999) mixed by Mastermind.
